Eligibility, evaluation criteria and application process

ANZALS is delighted to be able to offer five student scholarships to attend the half-day Higher Degree Research (HDR) Student Workshop on Monday 4th December 2023 and the three-day ANZALS conference to be held at Auckland University of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand, from Tuesday 5th to Thursday 7th December 2023.

The scholarship covers the cost of the HDR Student Workshop and the conference registration fee, and will also include a two-year ANZALS membership.  Students will be required to pay for their own flights, accommodation and any meals not included in the conference fee.

Scholarship winners will be notified by email by the ANZALS Student Representative by Monday, 28th August 2023.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to apply for the ANZALS Student Research Scholarship, students need to:

  • Be currently enrolled and studying (full-time or part-time) in an Honours, research Masters or PhD program at a tertiary institution.
  • Be attending the HDR Student Workshop held on Monday, 4th December 2023.
  • Submit an abstract for review by the conference organisers. The award of a scholarship is contingent upon the student’s abstract being accepted for the conference.
  • Abstract acceptance will be provided to the Student Liaison Officer before the peer review process.
  • Not be employed in a full-time position at a tertiary institution.
  • Be undertaking research within the leisure studies field.
  • Attach a 500-word statement explaining how their research fits into the theme of the ANZALS conference, and how attending the ANZALS HDR Student Research Workshop and 2023 conference will assist the student in furthering their studies.

Please also note that:

  • Preference will be given to ANZALS members
  • We encourage submissions from a wide range of students

Criteria for evaluation:

The ANZALS Student Research Scholarship will be administered by a panel comprised of at least two ANZALS Board members. The assessment criteria for the award are:

  • How well the research fits into the theme of the ANZALS conference
  • How attending the workshop and conference will assist in furthering their studies
  • The ability of the student to clearly articulate these points

Applications will be ranked according to the assessment criteria, and the panel will then share their rankings. Scholarships will be awarded to up to five applicants who, in the opinion of the panel, most clearly articulate the relevance of their research and the benefits of the conference.

The panel reserves the right not to award scholarships if the applications submitted are not of sufficient merit.

Application process:

The applicant must provide the following materials via email:

  • The ANZALS Student Research Scholarship application form (Download link available below)
  • A 500 word statement (anonymised and in Word format only)
  • Proof of their student status (confirmation of enrolment, letter from supervisor or similar)
  • Confirm they have submitted an abstract or full paper to the ANZALS 2023 conference.

Applications should be emailed to Katie McDonald, ANZALS Student Representative Katiej.mcdonald@vu.edu.au.

Please note: the 500-word statement must be in a Word document only and be anonymised (do not include your name or affiliation in this document so that it can be blind-reviewed). Failure to comply with this will result in your application being rejected.

Deadline for submission: Friday, 11th August 2023 (5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time)
